A passionate stargazer and community educator was honoured yesterday(11/4) in Manchester.
Ross Hockham, founder of the Milton Keynes based charity UK Astronomy, received a Doctor of the University degree from The Open University in recognition of his outstanding public service in astronomy education and outreach.
A self-taught astronomer and full-time firefighter, Ross has inspired thousands across the UK through his mobile planetarium, community events, and stargazing sessions — all in his spare time. From schools to care homes, and even online, UK Astronomy has grown into a thriving community of over 25,000 members.
His dedication to making the wonders of the night sky accessible has earned him national recognition, including the Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister and a British Citizens Medal of Honour.
The honorary degree was conferred during a ceremony held yesterday afternoon at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.
Ross told Bucks Radio he was "truly humbled and honoured to be recognised".
For a man who started with a tabletop telescope, the sky truly is no longer the limit.
