Pupils from Haddenham Junior School joined residents, staff, and local community members at Haddenham Park Care Home and Apartments this week for a special ceremony to bury a time capsule celebrating both local history and the voices of the village’s younger generation.
The event took place on the grounds of the former Haddenham Airfield, a site rich in historical significance. To honour that heritage, contributors placed information and artefacts related to the old airfield into the capsule to “keep the momentum going with the history of this particular site,” organisers explained.
The project also aimed to strengthen intergenerational connections by bringing pupils into the care home to take part in shared activities with residents. Staff described it as a meaningful opportunity for children and older adults to build friendships and learn from one another.
Children were invited to contribute personal items that reflected their lives today. Among the objects buried were:
-
A first-ever gymnastics medal
-
A football medal from a recent tournament
-
A hand-drawn picture of a frog, created at an after-school art club
-
A football trading card
-
Items from a parent’s local shop in Haddenham
-
Several notes to their future selves
One pupil said they were “really privileged to be invited to this event,” reflecting the excitement shared by many as they carefully lowered their chosen memories into the capsule.
The time capsule is planned to be unearthed in 30 years, and the children have already vowed to return as adults to witness the resurfacing. Organisers hope the moment will allow them to look back fondly on their contributions and the connection they helped forge between generations.
